Cognac
The drink called cognac is an intoxicating beverage. There are many
brands of Cognac and the most popular cognac brands include Courvoisier, Landy, Hennessy ( commonly mis-spelt as Hennessey), Martell, Moyet, Remy Martin and Hine cognacs. Cognac is a fine grape wine produced in the
Charente and Charente-Maritime areas of Western France and is named for
the town of Cognac which is in this French locality, to the north of
Bordeaux. Cognac is made by doubly distilling the white wines produced
in any of the growth areas. Cognac is double distilled from fermented grape juice and aged
in oak barrels which mellows it and provides its color, aroma and
flavor.
Types of Cognac
Cognac is
produced by the distillation of fermented grape juice. The primary grape
varieties used in making Cognac are Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle
Blanche which must constitute 90% of the cognac. Armagnac
is from the Gascony area of France. Cognac has a golden or brown color
has been aged in oak casks, a process called single barrel ageing. The

Hennessy Cognac is
produced by James Hennessy and Co. who merged with Moët et Chandon in
1971. In 1987 the drinks group merged with Louis Vuitton and LVMH was
created. But the history of Hennessy started hundreds of years before
these dates. In 1765 an Irish mercenary named Richard Hennessy was
rewarded by his sponsor, the French King, with land in the town of
Cognac in France and started to establish trade with the local wine. His
son, also named James Hennessy, expanded the business into the
production of brandy - Hennessy Cognac.
Courvoisier Brand of
Cognac
The first company to
produce Courvoisier was established by Felix Courvoisier in 1835.
Courvoisier is famous for being the favorite drink of the Emperor
Napoleon.
The Martell Brand of

Martell is another
leading manufacturer of Cognac and the company was founded by Jean
Martell in 1715.
Remy Martin Brand of
Cognac
Remy Martin was
originally produced by a French winemaker called Remy Martin, who
founded the company in 1724 and is now owned by the Remy Cointreau Group
which was founded in 1991.

The history of Hine
cognac dates back to the days of the French Revolution. An Englishman
named Thomas Hine moved to the cognac region of France in 1791 and
married a French girl called Françoise Elisabeth. Her father owned a
cognac company and in 1817 Thomas Hine founded the company called Thomas
Hine & Co.

cognac dates back to 1864 when the Moyet Company was founded by French
man named Euthrope Moyet who was a vine grower and distiller. The Moyet
Company was established in Saint-Sulpice in Western France near the town
